Description: Read the new article: ancient-origins.net/news-history-archaeology/karahan-tepe-winter-solstice-0016212. Jj Ainsworth and I (Hugh Newman) had the chance to visit the 11,500 year-old Karahan Tepe in southeast Turkey on the Winter Solstice 2021 early in the morning, as we had a feeling there may be something significant relating to this particular sunrise at the site. We arrived there on a cold, windy day to be greeted by the guardian of the Karahan Tepe, Ismail. We had met Ismail several times before on our previous visits as his family own the land. He welcomed us, we drank some tea very quickly and headed up the hill, past the newly constructed visitors centre. As the clouds dispersed, the sun shone through illuminating some of the enclosures. The AB pit, however, had what appeared to have no light hitting it yet, except a small blade of sunshine hitting the side of the protruding head. This hypogeum area is what Andrew Collins calls the 'Pillar Shrine' containing 11 monoliths, 10 of them carved out of the bedrock and one free-standing, along with the protruding head. We watched in anticipation as the light continued to illuminate the neck, the cheek, and then to the mouth with light coming only through the portal stone. Within one hour, the Sun had risen above the portal stone and illuminated the top of the head like a 'halo'. The weather gods were on our side, and it also felt like we were witnessing one of the biblical gods or the ‘Shining Ones’ who had emerged from his or her slumber to say hello to a very different world once again, being woken up by specifically timed beams of sunlight. Karahan Tepe, like Gobekli Tepe, is a remarkable and very ancient temple complex with much more to be revealed in the coming months. Watch out for a new article by myself and Jj Ainsworth being published tomorrow. Also, we return in September 2022 and you can join us at there and at many other sites in ancient Turkey.
